Speech and language services are also offered for private school students who meet the eligibility criteria, students involved in the PPCD program, and for preschool speech only students. Speech and language screening is available for all 3-5 year olds throughout the year.

Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD)

The Preschool Program for Children with Disabilities (PPCD) serves children ages 3 through 5 years who have been identified as disabled and determined to be at risk of not achieving academic and life skills without intervention. Referrals for screening of students are made to the Special Education Department. Parents are encouraged to make the referral call two to three months prior to the child’s third birthday. This program is offered at New Waverly Elementary.

L.I.F.E. Skills

L.I.F.E. is the acronym for Learning in Functional Environments. The purpose of an L.I.F.E. Skills programs is to prepare students with disabilities to participate and function as productively and independently as possible in a natural environment. The goal for these students is to achieve maximum independence while participating in integrated community, domestic, recreational and vocational activities.

Classroom Support

The classroom support program is designed so that the general education teacher is the main provider of instruction paired with a special education teacher or paraprofessional to assist students with disabilities in the classroom. Students with disabilities become an integrated member of the class without the continual need to leave the classroom for services in a pull-out program.

Functional Academics

This program is a structured special education program for students identified as having a disability. The special education teacher provides instruction in the Texas Essential Skills and Knowledge (TEKS) as appropriate for each individual student based on the students Individual Education Plan (IEP). The focus of the IEP(s) are the students’ deficit areas. Grading, lesson planning, modifications and adaptations are the responsibility of the special education teacher.

Child Find Services

Anyone can start the referral process by contacting the New Waverly Special Education office at (936) 344-2360.   This component is a continuous process of public awareness activities, screening and evaluation designed to locate, identify, and evaluate children with disabilities who are in need of Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) Programs, Special Education or Related Services.
